The 100 Day Encyclopaedia Project

A bookshelf filled with 10 volumes of an Encyclopaedia Britannica, circa 1959.

It’s that time of year again.

The start of the 100 Day Project will soon be here and I’ll once again take on a project of my own. This time around I’m calling it the 100 Day Encyclopaedia Project.

The source material

During the final year of my BFA studies, I completed a collage project titled Falconry, fencing, finance to Finland. It was a visual interpretation of the idea of the encyclopaedia.

My work was based on images found in a set of Encyclopaedia Britannica from 1959. Each paper collage in the collection of 36 represented a single volume of the encyclopaedia.

Ever since the completion of that project, I’ve wanted to revisit my encyclopaedic source material, saved for many years, and approach the subject matter in a different way and with a different artistic tool kit.

The time feels right to revisit these books of knowledge and use them for a 100 day project.

The project

An info graphic: My 100 day Encyclopaedia project.

This is the project I’m planning:

  • Working in a small sketchbook, I’ll make mixed media collages with materials I already have on hand

  • Found paper ephemera from my Encyclopaedia Britannica will feature prominently in each work

  • Scraps of paper used as painting palettes and old work on paper will be part of the source material as well

  • My sketchbook opens flat, allowing me to work on two pages at once

  • Visits to my sketchbook will be brief, 10 to 30 minutes at a time, requiring quick decision making

  • I’ll dip into the sketchbook, choosing pages at random on which to work, coming back to each page several times over the course of 100 days

With this loose framework guiding my sketchbook explorations, I’m once again eager to begin my 100 Day Project.

I’ll be sharing my process and progress on my Instagram account. If you’d like to know more about my art practice delivered directly to your inbox, why not sign up for my newsletter?
